The carbon challenges facing the agri-food sector

The food system is at the heart of the climate change issue, as the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases and the first victim of climate change, but also as the bearer of many solutions to the problem. The "food system" is at the heart of our lives. It encompasses all stages of food production, distribution and consumption. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, 2022), the food system could single-handedly lead to the failure of several United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals, as well as to the failure of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

‍Howcan companies - from all sectors - participate in the decarbonization and transition of the agri-food sector?

Through this sector study we will see that there is a diversity of possible actions for companies in the agri-food sector to have a direct impact on the GHG emissions of the agri-food sector. In a second step this sector focus studies the contribution levers that companies from all sectors can mobilize to also participate in the transition of the food system, while improving their competitiveness.
